FatherHood

I have been studying adoption from a biblical perspective. Before Christ we were slaves of sin. That meant we had no choice, no freedom, and no hope. But, Christ came to make a way for us to be freed. He paid the price of sin on the cross to redeem us or to buy us back. We who are children of God through faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26) have been freed from sin. Now we are heirs with Christ. I don’t know all that entails but it sounds pretty amazing.
My biological dad left my mother before I was born. I think he came to the hospital when I was three days old and that was it. I do not know him, never seen him, nor do I have any idea where he is. For the first six years of my life mom raised me pretty much by herself. At the age of six my mom married the man who would be my dad. I could not have asked for a better dad. He showed me how to play baseball, how to hunt, drive a car, and a little carpentry. He loved me as his son. But most importantly he showed me the way to Jesus and for that I will be eternally grateful.
Funny thing is that he did not just marry my mom though and say he was my dad. He chose to adopt me. That meant he would give me his name, I would become an heir with his children, and I would receive all the legal rights as his son.
So the day came. We were in court and I had to go back to the judges chambers. I will never forget standing in front of his big desk. He looked at me and asked me if I wanted to be adopted. Of course I said, “Yes”. With a strike of the gavel the judge made it so. My named changed that Day from Chad William Devon to Chad William Hood and I have been a Hood J ever since.
When we stand before God and choose by faith to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ the gavel of heaven is struck and we legally become children of God by adoption. For the believer listen to what John says “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name”. John 1:12 Does that amaze you? It amazes me. Our Creator, Sovereign Lord of all, cares about me and sent His Son to pay the price for my freedom that I might be adopted and be an heir with Christ. I am no longer Chad William Hood, Slave to Sin. I am Chad William Hood, Son of God. Father, help me not live up to my name.
